Since 1978, this hidden gem has earned its well-deserved reputation as a premier year-round outdoor sports destination.  Located in a renovated 1800’s general store, overlooking the picturesque river views and shoreline of Lancaster County, the idyllic setting of Shank’s Mare is a favorite launching point for water activities.

Shank’s Mare specializes in kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, hiking, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing.  The Outfitters Retail Store features clothing & equipment sales and rentals, while the Outdoor Education Center offers instruction, programs, trips, eco tours, and camps for a variety of activities based in & around the Susquehanna River.

Come and play, then relax with friends at the Lock 2 Cafe.  Host your next event at The Rookery, a meeting room with spectacular views of the Susquehanna.

Shanks’ Mare is open year-round…

May 1 through September 30

Monday – Friday 10am until 8pm
Saturday 10am until 4pm
Sunday Noon until 4pm

October 1 through April 30

Since 1978, Shank’s Mare has offered a wide variety of services and merchandise for those who appreciate outdoor fun and enjoy the adventures of an active lifestyle.  From their quality-made Go Play Outside clothing and gear to the captivating activities in their Outdoor Education Center, from the welcoming Lock 2 Cafe to the spacious Rookery Meeting Facility…the goal at Shank’s Mare is to showcase the cultural, environmental, and outdoor recreation opportunities in and around the Susquehanna River, as shared by Lancaster and York Counties.

For those who love playing in the great outdoors, the Store at Shank’s Mare has a wide selection of highest quality gear, equipment, and clothes.  Whether you are looking to buy a kayak and paddles or cross country skis and poles…you can be assured that you will be provided with any assistance needed in making the selections that are the best fit for your skills and preferences.  In addition to visiting the store in person, you can always review available selections online.
