While Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery was founded in 1861, the historic building which it calls home was built in in 1784 as one of the original structures in Lititz and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the Sturgis family carries on the rich tradition of pretzel baking and continues to use the same old-fashioned recipe and methods established by Julius Sturgis over 150 years ago.

To the delight of their thousands of visitors each year, Julius Sturgis offer tours of the original bakery to individuals, families, school field trips, church outings, and all variety of organized tour groups. All tour participants are given their own piece of dough and taught how to twist a pretzel, right next to the original ovens built by Julius Sturgis, where the tour guide gives an interesting presentation on the history of pretzel baking in America.
Admission is $3.50 for adults and $2.50 for children.

History of the Pretzel…
With a legacy of crunchy goodness that now extends over 150 years, Julius Sturgis Pretzel has lots of rich and interesting history to share with their visitors. But did you know that the pretzel itself originated as early as 610A.D. when monks from Italy used scraps of dough to form the shape of the arm of children in prayer, with the three holes of the pretzel representing the Christian Trinity?
