Growing Native Plants in Lancaster County PA, Buying at Local Greenhouses

“Urban sprawl” has covered 150 million acres of our continental US land.  According to Audubon.org, “The human-dominated landscape no longer supports functioning ecosystems, and the remaining isolated natural areas are not large enough to support wildlife.”  Every animal and human in the world gets it’s food from plants, (that is they either get their food from eating the plants, or from an animal that has eaten plants).  This is a crisis! But we can all do our part by planting NATIVE PLANTS -either on a portion of our yards, or even restoring an entire meadow.

So, what exactly are native plants?  Native plants are plants that are “original” to the area you live in.  They provide assorted habitats and food sources to local butterflies, birds, bees, and other wildlife in that area.

Most backyards contain violets, which are one of the most common and plentiful native plants around.  This is important because over 30 species of butterflies and moths use this as a caterpillar host plant ! That’s pretty astounding numbers for one small plant.

Many of the local Lancaster County greenhouses we feature are the ideal destination for purchasing various types of native plants.  Some of the destinations that specialize in natives plants include…Groff’s Plant Farm, Herbal Springs Farmstead, and Ken’s Gardens.
